From start to finish, the 20th century was an era of turbulence and rapid change for the Korean people. Throughout this period, Korean filmmakers have struggled to make sense of these changes, at the same time as they have been charged with the task of providing entertainment and escape for local audiences. This 2011 film series will present six features that have been particularly successful in capturing the social forces that have defined their times. These films are not only great works of art, they provide unique insight into 20th century Korean society.

The first film in the series, Madame Freedom (1956), is based on an explosively popular serial novel that was published in 1954 in the Seoul Newspaper. Readers were scandalized and fascinated by the story of a professor's wife who neglects her family and becomes caught up in the enticements of Seoul's burgeoning night life. When leading director Han Hyeong-mo shot a film adaptation of the work, it became a sensational box office hit that revived the film industry after the destruction of the Korean War.
