자본주의의 끝없는 추진력과 과도하게 자극적인 기술들이 우리의 주의를 가로채고, 철학자 한병철이 말한 ‘피로사회’가 현실화되면서 누군가는 이 지구에서의 삶에 대한 회의를 느끼고 있다. 인위적인 환경이 우리의 몸과 마음을 끊임없이 압박하여 혼란스러운 시대 속에서 자연은 점점 더 멀고 무의미하게 다가오기도 한다.

인간이 살아가는 데 필수적인 자연과의 연결이 단절된 오늘날, 지구를 구해야 한다는 외침은 어떻게 들릴 수 있을까?

'자연에 깃든 시선'은 영화를 통해 우리가 사는 이 지구, 그리고 그 안에 살아 숨 쉬는 풍경들과의 감각적 연결을 불러일으킬 가능성을 탐색하는 기획전이다.

지구에 살아있는 모든 것들의 연결성을 밝히거나, 자연의 압도적인 힘을 통해 영화적 숭고함을 자아내는 방식으로 이번 기획전에 선정된 영화들은 자연 세계를 본능적인 방식으로 경험할 수 있게 한다. 이 작품들은 자연을 해석하거나 정복의 대상으로 바라보는 시선에서 벗어나, 우리가 자연의 일부임을 다시금 느끼게 하며 교감할 기회를 제공한다. 다시 말해 이 영화들은 "감각적 세계와의 만남을 새롭게 할" 잠재력을 지니고 있다. (에이브럼, p. ix-x)

1970년 이래로 매년 4월 22일은 ‘지구의 날’로 기념되고 있으며, 해마다 전 세계 수백만 명의 사람들이 모여 환경 문제에 대한 인식을 높이고 있다. 이번에 상영되는 작품을 통해 자연의 존재를 조금이라도 가깝게 느낄 수 있기를 바란다.

As the relentless drive of capitalism and hyper-stimulating technologies hijack our attention and drive us to what Byung-Chul Han has termed the “burnout society,” many of us have grown disillusioned about life on this planet. Constantly suffocated by physical and psychological manifestations of artificiality, the natural world can feel increasingly distant and meaningless. How can calls to save the planet be heard when so much of humankind feels disconnected from the nature they depend on to exist?

‘Visions Within Nature’ aims to explore the potential of cinema as a means to evoke a sensorial connection with our planet Earth and its living landscapes. Whether by illuminating the interconnectedness of all organic entities or conjuring the powerful forces of nature to evoke the cinematic sublime, the films selected for this program allow us to experience the natural world in a visceral way. These works offer an opportunity not to understand and conquer nature, but to feel and embrace it as a vital part of our existence. In short, they hold the potential to “renew our acquaintance with the sensuous world.” (Abram, p. ix-x)

Since 1970, April 22nd has been celebrated as Earth Day, a day in which millions of people across the globe come together to raise awareness on environmental issues. This program was prepared in the spirit of Earth Day with the hope that these films will each in their own way allow audiences to feel the presence of nature that surrounds us.
